Learning objective generator: one sentence, one action verb, Bloom’s taxonomy

A training video that works starts with one sentence: what the viewer will be able to do after watching it. This tool writes it with you, from the six levels of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy.

After the video, … will be able to apply ….Show a situation, then the expected action; check it on the job afterwards.

Why the objective comes first

In one sentence: a learning objective says what the viewer will be able to do after the video, with an observable verb; it decides what the video keeps and what stays in the document.

A good objective fits in one sentence and has three parts:

  1. Who: “new warehouse pickers”, not “employees”.
  2. An observable action verb: “apply”, “spot”, “explain”, not “know” or “be aware of”, which cannot be checked.
  3. What, and under which conditions: “the call-back procedure before any transfer, without help”.

If you write three objectives, you have three videos. It is the first step of our guide How to turn a PDF into a training video.

The six levels of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy

The 2001 revision by Anderson and Krathwohl orders objectives from the simplest to the most demanding:

LevelWhat the person doesExample verbs
1. RememberRetrieve informationlist, name, recognize
2. UnderstandExplain in their own wordsexplain, summarize, compare
3. ApplyUse a procedure in a situationapply, carry out, complete
4. AnalyzeBreak down, spot what is wrongdistinguish, spot, diagnose
5. EvaluateJudge against criteriacheck, justify, choose
6. CreateProduce something newdesign, write, plan

Which level for a short video

A one-to-three-minute video usually targets the first three levels: making a rule stick, making a mechanism understood, showing how to apply a procedure. Levels 4 to 6 are better worked on in a workshop, a role-play or a quiz, which the video can introduce. The tool says so under each objective.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a learning objective and a competency?

An objective describes what someone will be able to do after a specific piece of training; a competency is broader and builds over time, through several actions and practice.

Why avoid “know” or “be aware of”?

Because they cannot be observed. “Spot the three signs of a fake email” can be checked; “be aware of phishing” cannot.

Is what I type stored?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
