ADDIE: definition

ADDIE is a five-step model for designing training: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation.

The five steps, applied to a video

StepQuestionFor a training video
AnalysisWhat problem, for whom? The audience, the gap to close, constraints (language, phones)
DesignWhat objective, what flow? The one-sentence objective, the scene-by-scene plan
DevelopmentBuild itScript, drawing, voice, subtitles
ImplementationDeliver itLMS, intranet, chat, when in the programme
EvaluationDid it work?Views, quiz, feedback from the floor, then an update

Example

An L&D lead applies ADDIE to a payment call-back procedure: the analysis shows mistakes come from time pressure, the objective becomes “call back on a known number”, the video is made, sent to the finance team, then evaluated with a test call three months later.

The model and its critics

ADDIE is often called too linear. In practice teams iterate: with a tool like EducPilot, design and development loop quickly (plan, storyboard, annotation, next version).

Bloom’s taxonomy, storyboard, Kirkpatrick model.

  • Bloom’s taxonomy

Bloom’s taxonomy orders learning objectives in six levels, from remember to create. Definition of the revised version, action verbs, and how to use it for video.

  • Storyboard

A storyboard describes a video scene by scene before it is made: voice, picture, length. Definition, a training video example, and why to approve it first.

  • Kirkpatrick model

The Kirkpatrick model evaluates training on four levels: reaction, learning, behavior, results. Definition, and how to apply each level to a training video.

  • Learning objective generator: one sentence, one action verb, Bloom’s taxonomy

Pick the audience, a level of Bloom’s taxonomy and an action verb: the tool writes your video’s learning objective in one sentence. Free, no sign-up.

  • Blended learning

Blended learning combines online and in-person training in one programme. Definition, a sample programme, and where short video fits best in it.

  • Forgetting curve

Ebbinghaus’s forgetting curve describes how fast we lose what we learned without review. Definition, what a 2015 replication found, and how to slow it down.
