SCORM: definition

SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a set of technical specifications that lets an e-learning module run in any compatible learning platform (LMS) and report the learner’s progress back to it.

In practice

A SCORM module is a package (a .zip file) holding the content and a manifest. Once imported into the LMS, it exchanges data with it: time spent, pages viewed, quiz score, “completed” status. The two versions still most in use are SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004.

The standard is maintained by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning), which now recommends xAPI and cmi5 for new projects, while acknowledging that SCORM remains in wide use.

Example

A training provider delivers a 20-minute SCORM module to a client: the client imports it into its LMS and sees, employee by employee, who finished it and with what score.

And EducPilot videos?

EducPilot does not export SCORM packages for now: it delivers MP4 files. If your LMS requires SCORM, an authoring tool can wrap the video in a SCORM module, or other tools offer it directly (see our comparisons).

LMS, xAPI.
